Town 7 km northwest of Tzintzuntzan
A Purépecha village on the north shore of the lake, with traditional houses and a big patron-saint fiesta every September 30.
San Jerónimo Purenchécuaro is a Purépecha community on the northern shore of Lake Pátzcuaro, a short way west of Santa Fe de la Laguna, in the municipality of Quiroga. Its Purépecha name is usually translated as "shop where pots are sold," a reminder of the old trade in pottery around the lake, and the village still feels rooted in its own language and customs.
This is not a place of big monuments but of everyday life: adobe houses with tile roofs and wooden details, fields running down toward the water, and the church dedicated to San Jerónimo at its center. Small-group tours from Morelia sometimes stop here to let visitors talk with residents about Purépecha traditions, food and family life.
The best day to come is September 30, the feast of San Jerónimo, when the image of the saint is carried in procession through the streets to the church for mass, followed by music, food and folk dances. On other days it makes a quiet stop on a drive around the north shore after Tzintzuntzan, Quiroga and Santa Fe.
