Morelia has the Purépecha heartland on its doorstep. Cuitzeo, with its Augustinian convent above a vast shallow lake, is half an hour north; Tzintzuntzan, the old Purépecha capital with its round pyramids, and Pátzcuaro, the lake town of Day of the Dead fame, are under an hour west, with the copper workshops of Santa Clara del Cobre just beyond. Tacámbaro and the guitar-making town of Paracho are an hour and a half. For a weekend, head east to the monarch butterfly sanctuaries at Angangueo and the mining town of Tlalpujahua.
