About Morelia
Morelia is the capital and largest city of Michoacán, spread across the Guayangareo Valley in the north-centre of the state; the city counted 743,275 people in the 2020 census. Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza founded it in 1541 as the New City of Michoacán, and in 1545 it received city status under the name Valladolid, after the viceroy's home town. For decades it competed with Pátzcuaro, the seat backed by Bishop Vasco de Quiroga, and by 1580 the bishopric and the provincial government had both moved here. Its colleges trained Miguel Hidalgo and José María Morelos, who was born in the city in 1765, and in 1828 the new state of Michoacán renamed it Morelia in his honour.
The historic centre keeps much of the street plan laid out in the 16th century, with wide streets that bend gently rather than following a rigid grid. Almost everything was built in pink cantera stone, which gives the old town a single warm colour; the federal government lists 1,113 buildings of historic value here, and UNESCO added the centre to the World Heritage list in 1991. Instead of one main square, the cathedral stands between two plazas, the Plaza de Armas and the Plaza Melchor Ocampo, with the old seminary that is now the Palacio de Gobierno across Avenida Madero. Walking east along Madero you pass the Museo del Dulce and reach the 253-arch aqueduct, the Fuente de las Tarascas and the tree-lined Calzada that leads to the Santuario de Guadalupe; west of the cathedral are the Palacio Clavijero, the sweet market and the Conservatorio de las Rosas.
Morelia is a university and government city as well as a tourist one. Local food draws on Purépecha cooking: corundas, triangular tamales wrapped in green corn leaves; uchepos, soft fresh-corn tamales served with cream; sopa tarasca, a bean soup with dried chile; enchiladas placeras; morisqueta and churipo. The city is also known for its sweets, above all ate, a firm fruit paste, sold with dozens of others at the Mercado de Dulces. The calendar is full: the Morelia International Film Festival, founded in 2003, runs its 24th edition from 16 to 25 October 2026; the international music festival comes in summer and the organ festival uses the cathedral's 4,600-pipe organ. Every Saturday night the cathedral is lit up with music and fireworks, and Day of the Dead is marked around the cathedral in early November.
