    About Opopeo

    Opopeo is a town of some ten thousand people a few kilometers east of Santa Clara del Cobre, in the same municipality of Salvador Escalante, and while its neighbor hammers copper, Opopeo works wood. Furniture making is the town's main trade, and records show woodworking here as far back as 1614, so the craft may well be older than the colonial town itself.

    Workshops all over town turn out chairs, tables, chests, doors and carved pieces from the pine and oak of the surrounding hills, many of them sold straight from the family workshop or from showrooms along the main streets. The center has a colonial church dating from the 17th century and portales, arcades, around the main plaza.

    The big event is the Feria de la Silla, the Chair Fair, held in October, when the town shows off its best work and the plaza fills with furniture, music and food. Any time of year, though, a short visit from Santa Clara lets you see two very different crafts side by side in a single morning.

    How to get to Opopeo

    Drive from Pátzcuaro: 15 min, 15 km

    Opopeo lies on Highway 120 between Pátzcuaro and Santa Clara del Cobre: about 14 km south of Pátzcuaro (roughly 15 minutes) and about 4 km from Santa Clara (roughly 8 minutes). From Morelia, drive to Pátzcuaro on Highway 14 first, then continue south on Highway 120. Local combis run between Opopeo and Santa Clara del Cobre, and Santa Clara has transport on to Pátzcuaro.
