Comonfort is a small Guanajuato town on the road between Celaya and San Miguel de Allende, still known to many by its old name, Chamacuero. The center has a shaded main garden, the parish of San Francisco and a museum to the liberal thinker José María Luis Mora, who was born here. It is a good stop for crafts: volcanic stone molcajetes and metates, reed baskets and brass pieces. Try the gorditas, the handmade ice cream and the bread called fruta de horno.
History
Before the Spanish, the place was known as Chamacuero, a word of Purépecha origin that has been translated as "place of ruins" or "to fall down". This was frontier country, home to Chichimeca groups, among them the Pame, who resisted the advance of colonial settlement.
On January 1, 1562, Francisco de Velasco raised Chamacuero to the rank of villa, with the purpose of protecting settlers in the region from Chichimeca attacks. In 1591 its residents began calling it San Francisco de Chamacuero, and the first orderly settlement took shape in the San Agustín neighborhood.
The town was declared a municipality on November 7, 1861. In 1874, on the initiative of the district's political chief, the state renamed it Chamacuero de Comonfort in honor of President Ignacio Comonfort, and over time the name was shortened to Comonfort. Its best-known native is José María Luis Mora, the priest and politician who argued for the separation of church and state in the early republic. The songwriter Gabino Palomares was also born here. Comonfort joined the Pueblos Mágicos program in 2018.
