Lake 11 km west of Comonfort
A reservoir in a protected area west of Comonfort with rowing, fishing, camping and tree-lined trails.
The Presa de Neutla is a reservoir in the hills west of Comonfort, next to the old village of Neutla. The village claims a foundation date of 1536, and its name is said to come from the Nahuatl Cuauhnecutla, "place of honey". The dam, with a capacity of around five million cubic meters, waters the surrounding farms and is the centerpiece of a protected ecological area that covers the reservoir and its surroundings.
Around the water there is a small ecotourism park where locals come on weekends to row, take a boat out, fish or simply picnic on the shore. The countryside around Neutla and the neighboring community of Orduña is unusually green for this dry part of Guanajuato, with long avenues of pirul, pine and mesquite trees that are good for walking, birdwatching and mountain biking, and camping is allowed along the shore.
It is a simple, unpolished place, popular with families from Comonfort and Celaya, and a nice contrast to the colonial towns of the region. Come in the morning or late afternoon, when the light on the water is softest and the birds are most active.
What to see and do
Rent a rowboat or take a short boat ride on the reservoir.
Walk or bike the tree-lined avenues of the Neutla–Orduña woodland.
Bring binoculars for waterbirds and woodland species.
Picnic or camp on the shore; bring your own supplies.
Getting there
The dam is roughly 10 km west of Comonfort, about 20 minutes by car on the local road to Neutla. There is little public transport, so a car or taxi from Comonfort is the easiest option. Services at the park are basic, so bring water and food.
