Archaeological site 23 km northwest of Comonfort
Otomí ceremonial center with a pyramid aligned to the Sun, Moon and Venus; reopened in 2026 for guided visits.
Cañada de la Virgen is a pre-Hispanic ceremonial center on a hilltop above the Laja River valley, southwest of San Miguel de Allende. It was built and used roughly between 540 and 1050 AD, most likely by Otomí-speaking people, at the northern edge of Mesoamerica. The site has seven large structures, including sunken courtyards, plazas, and a ceremonial causeway about a kilometer long that leads up to the main complex.
That main pyramid is known as the House of the Thirteen Heavens. Studies by Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) show that the buildings were laid out to track the Sun, the Moon, and Venus, and that the sunken patio may have been flooded to work as a mirror for watching the sky. Burials found in the complex suggest it was also a place to honor the dead.
The ruins sat for years on private land and were closed to the public for a long stretch because of a dispute over the property. A presidential decree recently returned the 701-hectare core of the site to public hands, and INAH reopened it on May 24, 2026, with visits in guided groups. Walking the old causeway toward the pyramid, with the dry hills all around, is one of the best archaeological experiences in central Guanajuato.

Getting there
From Comonfort, drive north to San Miguel de Allende (about 30 minutes) and then take the highway toward Guanajuato city; the turnoff is at about kilometer 9.5. Allow roughly an hour each way. Since the May 2026 reopening the site runs Thursday to Sunday, only in guided groups that leave at set times from the visitor center. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and water.
