About Puerto de Nieto

Puerto de Nieto began as a cattle estancia. In 1554 Diego Nieto de Santa Cruz held the land and much of what lay on it: springs, woodland, hunting grounds. People came to call the place the Estancia de Nieto. The "puerto" part comes from a spot on the property known as the estancia del portezuelo, a gap between two hills. Over the generations the estate passed by inheritance through several owners and became the Hacienda de San Nicolás de Puerto de Nieto, where families from the surrounding villages worked.

It stood along the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, the route that tied the viceregal capital to Santa Fe, in New Mexico. The main house keeps its sixteenth-century walls, though it has been remodelled, and today it runs as a hotel, spa and event venue with seven hectares of gardens where agapanthus bloom once a year among the prickly pears. It is not a monument open to everyone: you see it as a guest or at an event.

The village, at 2,131 metres and with 1,524 inhabitants in 2020, lives by its calendar. The Virgen de la Luz presides over the church sanctuary, and her patron festival brings a dawn rosary from 4 a.m. followed by morning Mass, dances, fireworks and the "cuadro de los locos", a costumed parade that dances for hours, often in fulfilment of vows. On 3 and 4 June the village celebrates the Señor de la Capilla. Each 12 September families walk up La Márgara, almost three hours on foot to about 2,661 metres, for a picnic and a view over the neighbouring communities; another custom is Mass at the chapel on Cerro El Macho.

How to get to Puerto de Nieto

Drive from San Miguel de Allende: 25 min, 20 km

Puerto de Nieto lies about 22 kilometres east of San Miguel de Allende and roughly 20 minutes by car. By car, locals' advice is to ask for the road to Santas Marías; the hacienda's address is Camino de Santas Marías a Puerto de Nieto no. 102, which works for a GPS or a taxi. The press places the village on highway 111.

By public transport, take an urban bus from the San Miguel de Allende bus station to the Ignacio Ramírez market, then the "Santas Marías" route, whose terminal is right behind the hacienda. That tip comes from the hacienda's front desk and a 2024 article; San Miguel's routes change, so confirm it at the market. From Mexico City or Querétaro you first reach San Miguel de Allende by coach (Primera Plus, Flecha Amarilla, ETN) and then make this last leg. Querétaro is about 37 km as the crow flies, roughly 45 minutes; Comonfort roughly 35 minutes.
