Landmark 10 km northeast of Dolores Hidalgo
Dolores Hidalgo's flagship winery, with award-winning architecture, a tasting tower and vineyard tours.
Cuna de Tierra is the winery that put Dolores Hidalgo on Mexico's wine map. Its name, "cradle of earth", nods to the town's role as the cradle of Independence and to Father Miguel Hidalgo himself, who encouraged vine growing and winemaking in Dolores in the years before 1810. The modern project began when the Vega family started planting vines with Spanish grower Juan Manchón, and the first commercial wines came out in 2008.
The estate covers more than thirty hectares at high altitude on the Dolores–San Luis de la Paz highway, planted mainly with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, alongside other crops. Its contemporary winery, finished in 2013, has won architecture awards, and a tasting tower looks out over the vines and the dry hills. Its red blends have collected international medals, and it is considered one of the benchmarks of Guanajuato wine.
Visits include guided tours of the vineyard and cellar with tastings, and there are pairing menus and special dinners. It is the easiest serious winery visit from Dolores, only a few minutes out of town.
