About Jardín Reforma

Jardín Reforma is one of the tree-shaded squares in the historic centre of Guanajuato city, inside the monument zone that UNESCO listed as a World Heritage Site in 1988. The municipality also lists it as a historic monument in its built-heritage inventory.

Architect José Noriega laid it out on land that had been the corral of the Belén complex, whose church still stands beside it. The opening date is uncertain, somewhere between 1861 and 1875, and the garden only took the name Reforma in 1923.

The main entrance is the showpiece: a round arch set on top of a smaller one, joined to a row of Ionic columns. Inside, symmetrical paths lead to a plain fountain carved from the green cantera stone used all over town, with ornamental beds and shaded benches around it. One side is closed by the side wall of the University of Guanajuato's School of Architecture, which holds a baroque chapel now used as the Armando Olivares Carrillo library.

It is quieter than the Jardín de la Unión, used more by locals and students than by tour groups. Plaza de San Roque is just steps away, with its 1952 stone cross and six wrought-iron lamps; Cervantes' short comic plays, the Entremeses Cervantinos, have been staged there since 1953 and grew into the Festival Internacional Cervantino. The two make an easy pair on a walk through the centre.

How to get to Jardín Reforma

Drive from Silao: 20 min, 22 km

The garden is right in central Guanajuato city, an easy walk from anywhere in the historic centre. The Central de Autobuses de Guanajuato is about 7 km out, at km 7 of the Silao-Guanajuato toll road (110D); from there the Centro-Central city bus runs through the tunnels into town (ask the driver where to get off), or take a taxi. Primera Plus, ETN, Omnibus de México and Estrella Blanca serve the station; from León there are Unebus and Primera Plus, from San Miguel de Allende the ride takes 1 hour and from Mexico City's Terminal Norte about 5 hours. By car from Irapuato, take Hwy 45 to Silao and then the 110D, about 45 minutes; from Dolores Hidalgo, about 45 minutes to 1 hour on Hwy 110. Leave the car in a public garage and walk: the centre is all narrow lanes and tunnels.
