Irapuato, Mexico's strawberry capital, sits in the middle of the Bajío with Guanajuato's Pueblos Mágicos about an hour away in every direction: the lakeside Augustinian convent of Yuriria, the molcajete carvers of Comonfort, the riverside convents of Salvatierra, the ex-hacienda village of Jalpa de Cánovas and Dolores Hidalgo, cradle of Independence and of eccentric ice-cream flavours. Within two hours are Cuitzeo on its lake and the Altos de Jalisco at Lagos de Moreno.
