About San Antonio el Rico

The story of San Antonio el Rico is the story of its hacienda, built in the eighteenth century and held by several owners who tried to expand it with different activities. Irapuato's Municipal Historical Archive holds records from the War of Independence: the estate lost crops and livestock, and ran short of labourers, who left to join the insurgent ranks.

One anecdote is repeated by neighbours and the local press. In 1811, before the taking of the Alhóndiga de Granaditas, Miguel Hidalgo passed through Irapuato and seized a herd of fighting bulls from this hacienda, then owned by Don Rafael Bravo. The estate bordered Labor de Texas, the hacienda La Calera, Rancho San Pedro and Labor de Santa Rosa, names that suggest how large the farmland around it was.

The main house, the corrals and the entrance still stand; what was the tree orchard is now cropland. The hacienda is not open to the public, but it can be seen from the road, and the people of the community keep its history alive. The village name points to Saint Anthony of Padua, its patron saint. In 2020 the locality had 2,572 inhabitants. It is a short stop for anyone touring the municipality's haciendas, not a destination for several hours.
