About Abasolo

Abasolo is the seat of the municipality of the same name, in the Bajío farmland of southwestern Guanajuato, at about 1,700 metres and ringed by low hills. It had 29,002 people in 2020. Before it took the surname of independence fighter Mariano Abasolo it was Cuitzeo, a Purépecha word usually rendered as place of skunks: a cattle ranch from the 16th century, the mission of San José de Ojo Caliente from 1598 and then the hacienda of Cuitzeo de los Naranjos. Its last owner sold the land in plots in 1850; the state recognised it as a pueblo in 1852 and a municipality in 1870, and the present name dates from 1963.

Miguel Hidalgo, born on the neighbouring Corralejo estate, was baptised in the hacienda chapel on 16 May 1753. The font moved to the new parish church in 1896, and for the 1910 centenary the town offered it to President Porfirio Díaz, who had it taken to Chapultepec Castle in Mexico City.

The centre took shape in the late 19th century. The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Luz was laid out in 1857 and took 39 years to finish, opening in February 1896; the town hall dates from 1892. Around the Jardín Hidalgo and Plaza Constitución stand the neoclassical houses of the old ranch owners, with cantera-columned patios. Behind town rises the Brinco del Diablo hill, climbed by a pilgrimage every 14 September.

Most visitors come for the hot water. The La Caldera, La Muralla, Las Pomas and Capapetiro springs feed several balnearios; La Caldera, opened in the 1930s on the north side of town and visited by President Lázaro Cárdenas, is the best known, with a wave pool, hotel and spa. Brick-making employs a large share of local families, alongside livestock. East of the town lies the Peralta archaeological site, one of the largest monumental complexes built in the Bajío between AD 200 and 700.
