About Corralejo de Hidalgo

Corralejo de Hidalgo is a village of 730 people northeast of Pénjamo, built over the core of the old Corralejo hacienda. Alonso de Angulo y Montesino founded the estate in the 1560s, and Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla was born in its main house on 8 May 1753. His father, Cristóbal Hidalgo, managed the property, so the future priest of Dolores grew up in a comfortable household. Only the foundations and the pediment of the house survive, and both are protected as national monuments.

Don't mix it up with Estación Corralejo, a few minutes earlier on the same road, where a well-known tequila distillery occupies another hacienda building with the Museo del Vino y la Botella. Many people assume Hidalgo was born in that mansion, but this is the actual birthplace. Both communities belonged to the same estate and together make up the Ruta Corralejo.

In front of the foundations is an esplanade with a colossal monument to Hidalgo and a giant flagpole; beside it stands the Baroque chapel the family built, with the Sierra de Pénjamo behind. The visitor center houses the Museo Interactivo Miguel Hidalgo, exhibition rooms, galleries of Guanajuato crafts and a food court run by traditional cooks from Pénjamo. Every 8 May, as part of the municipality's May Fair, Hidalgo's birthday is marked here with municipal, state and federal officials and the army.

How to get to Corralejo de Hidalgo

Drive from Irapuato: 45 min, 48 km

By car: from Pénjamo take federal highway 90 toward Irapuato. At the large roundabout with the Hidalgo statue, turn onto the state road toward Cuerámaro; you pass Estación Corralejo first, about 15 km from Pénjamo, and reach the former hacienda of Corralejo de Hidalgo a few minutes further on. From Irapuato, follow the same highway 90 in the other direction. By bus: Flecha Amarilla links the Irapuato bus station with Pénjamo's station roughly hourly (about 1 hour 10 minutes), but we found no documented combi or bus out to Corralejo; continue from Pénjamo by taxi or car. Jalpa de Cánovas, the nearest Pueblo Mágico, is more than 1 hour 20 minutes away by road.
