Town 29 km west of Dolores Hidalgo
A cool mountain village in the oak forests on the road to Guanajuato, known for homemade fruit preserves.
Santa Rosa de Lima is a mountain village high in the Sierra de Santa Rosa, on the winding highway between Dolores Hidalgo and the city of Guanajuato. At about 2,550 meters above sea level, it is surrounded by oak forest that turns the drive into one of the prettiest in the state, with cool air, misty mornings in the rainy season and wide views back over the plains.
The village is named after its patron, Saint Rose of Lima, the first saint born in the Americas, and its parish church is the center of village life. Santa Rosa has long been known for the fruit preserves, jams and liqueurs made by local families, especially women's groups, and sold in small shops along the road, along with simple restaurants serving hearty mountain food to travelers.
It is a small, quiet place of around 1,300 people, best enjoyed as a stop on the road: stretch your legs, buy a jar of preserves, have a warm meal and take a short walk in the forest before continuing to Guanajuato or back to Dolores.
