About Comanjilla

Comanjilla is a village of about 3,200 people in the municipality of Silao de la Victoria, at 1,890 metres. Its name comes from Purépecha and is read as "cool, shady place", which is ironic for somewhere known for the opposite: the water that rises here comes out very hot. The source is recorded at 96 °C; it is cooled before it reaches the pools.

That spring supports nearly everything there is to visit. Termas Comanjilla is a water park with a spring-fed pool, a wave pool, six slides and individual thermal tubs, plus green areas where you can eat what you bring. It is run by Hoteles Misión, which also operates the Hotel Misión Comanjilla next door; at the hotel the thermal springs supply the pool, the basins and the showers. Separately there are the Pocitos, pools in the community where some locals still go to wash clothes.

Out of the water the village is small and quiet, and it has grown slowly: from 304 people in 1940 to 2,101 in 2000 and 3,162 in 2020. It works best as a half-day trip from León or Silao, with the Bajío airport 10-15 minutes away by car, rather than as a multi-day destination.

How to get to Comanjilla

Drive from Silao: 25 min, 19 km

From León it is 29 km by road and about 40 minutes, though some hotels say 25 minutes to the Poliforum. Leave León on federal highway 45 toward Silao; Comanjilla lies about 14 km south of Silao's centre, and the access road is the Carretera León-Comanjilla. The Bajío airport is 10-15 minutes away. No regular bus stops at the entrance, so take a taxi from León or Silao for the last stretch; parking is free. From Lagos de Moreno, the nearest Pueblo Mágico, it is roughly 65 minutes by car.
