Nature reserve 9 km northeast of Jalpa de Cánovas

Cañada de Negros is a farming village a few kilometers north of Jalpa de Cánovas, in the same green, orchard-filled corner of western Guanajuato near the Jalisco border. Like Jalpa, it grew around an old hacienda, and the former estate grounds and the lake beside them have been turned into a family nature park that is the most popular outing from Jalpa.
The park centers on the lake, where you can rent kayaks and paddle among the reeds, and on walking trails through the surrounding woods and fields, good for spotting birds and local plants. There are bicycles to rent, a small children's zoo and playground, and for those who want a little adrenaline, a zip line and a suspension bridge. Cabins can be rented and there is space for camping, so some visitors stay the night.
It is a simple, family-oriented place rather than a polished resort, and on weekends it fills with families from León and the surrounding towns. Come on a weekday morning if you want the lake and trails mostly to yourself.

Getting there
The park is at kilometer 12 of the Purísima del Rincón–Manuel Doblado road, about 10 to 15 minutes from Jalpa de Cánovas by car. Public transport is limited, so drive or arrange a taxi from Jalpa or Purísima. Bring sunscreen and cash for rentals.
