Ibarrilla

Ibarrilla began in 1595, when the Cabildo of the Villa de León granted three caballerías of land to Luis Alonso de Torres, son of one of the city's founders. Later owners kept adding land until it reached nine caballerías plus half a grazing site on the hillside. In the mid-1700s it was bought by Agustín de Septién y Montero, a merchant from Santander with a shop in Guanajuato.

The hacienda grew wheat and raised cattle for centuries. A textile mill was set up in the old grain lofts in 1835. The Revolution brought Villista troops, and land reform later stripped it of much of its land: in 1939 villagers asked to enlarge the ejido and were refused because only 11 farmers and 81 vacant plots were on record, while other parcels got their grant on 8 May 1943. One of those plots became the León Zoo, opened in September 1979.

The main house was bought in 2011 and has hosted weddings, baptisms and parties since 25 May 2012. In front of the church, where Mass is often held on Sunday at midday, quesadilla stands set up under the trees. The population went from 231 in 1940 to 2,054 in 2010 and 1,864 in 2020, as the city of León crept closer.
