Huichapan is a small town in the rolling hills of the Valle del Mezquital, in western Hidalgo. It is the seat of its municipality and has its own Museum of Archaeology and History, a good starting point for understanding the area. Visitors come for a quiet historic center and a town closely tied to the story of Mexican independence.
History
Huichapan lies in the Valle del Mezquital, a region long associated with the Otomi people. The town is remembered above all for its part in the independence movement: on September 16, 1812, the insurgent leader Ignacio López Rayón held here the first commemoration of the Grito de Dolores, the origin of the celebration that Mexico repeats every year. That connection is reflected in its sister-city ties with Tlalpujahua de Rayón and Zitácuaro, both towns linked to Rayón.
Huichapan was named a Pueblo Mágico on October 6, 2012.
