    About La Cruz

    La Cruz sits at 2,150 metres above sea level, in the part of Huichapan municipality that belongs to the Valle del Mezquital. The climate is semi-dry and temperate and the land is hilly sierra: the village lies within the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, in the Llanuras y Sierras de Querétaro e Hidalgo subprovince, and its water drains into the Moctezuma basin through the Tecozautla sub-basin.

    It has grown slowly. INEGI counted 287 people in 1900 and only 187 in 1940; there were 440 in 1990, 506 in 2010 and 580 in 2020 (277 men and 303 women), or 1.22% of the municipality's population. This is a rural hamlet; what there is to visit is mostly in Huichapan.

    What is close is Huichapan, about 12 km away in a straight line, a Pueblo Mágico with the parish church of San Mateo Apóstol (1753), the Museo de Arqueología e Historia and the Saucillo aqueduct, 155 m long and 44 m high with 14 arches, built between 1753 and 1758. The municipality borders Querétaro to the west, so San Juan del Río is also within reach for anyone travelling through the area.

    Drive from San Juan del Río: 45 min, 30 km

    La Cruz is about 12 km from Huichapan in a straight line (roughly 15 minutes by car) and about 23 km from San Juan del Río, Querétaro (roughly 25 minutes). Huichapan is the gateway: from Mexico City's Terminal de Autobuses del Norte, direct buses to Huichapan leave every hour, run by Autobuses Conexión (an Estrella Blanca line); the trip takes about 4 hours and cost around 300 pesos in May 2023. Huichapan's bus station is on Calle Abundio Martínez, in the centre. From there the last stretch to La Cruz is by taxi or your own car; ask in town about local transport to the village and about the state of the road before you set out.
