About San Francisco
San Francisco had 1,909 residents in 2020, 5% of the municipality of Tecozautla. It lies at 1,831 metres in low hills of the Mezquital Valley, some 12 km south-west of Tecozautla, and about 27 km from San Juan del Río in a straight line.
Its census record is unusual. In 1900 there were 948 people, and only 313 in 1910; then 320 in 1921, 403 in 1930 and 1940, 449 in 1950, 634 in 1960 and 802 in 1970. In 1980 the figure dropped to 417, and from there climbed to 1,271 in 1990, 1,413 in 2000, 1,697 in 2010 and 1,909 in 2020. The climate is semi-dry temperate and the water drains to the Río Tecozautla sub-basin.
The municipality is one of Hidalgo's larger ones, at 575.6 km², and its seat has been a Pueblo Mágico since 2015; its hot springs and spa resorts are what the travel press advertises most. According to Wikipedia, the name Tecozautla comes from Nahuatl and is read as "place where yellow earth abounds". San Francisco has no documented attraction of its own: it serves to see the country life of the municipality.
