Hot springs 8 km northwest of Tecozautla
A thermal park built around a steaming volcanic vent, with hillside pools, a zip line and the site of Latin America's first geothermal well.
El Géiser is the attraction that put Tecozautla on the map. In the community of Uxdejhé, northwest of town, a natural vent in the hills pushes out water at around 95 °C along with a tall column of steam, and the whole park is built around it. The water is cooled and piped into a series of pools set into the rocky slope, typically around 40 °C, surrounded by barrel cactus and semi-desert scrub.
The place also has a place in engineering history. In 1955 the first geothermal well in Latin America was drilled here, and a small plant produced electricity until 1971. Its old structures are still on the grounds, a reminder that this was an experiment long before geothermal energy became common in Mexico.
Today El Géiser is a full family resort: several pools of different temperatures, water slides, hydromassage tubs, hanging bridges, a zip line, trails, camping and cabins, plus a hotel. It gets busy on weekends and holidays, when people come from Mexico City and Querétaro, so a weekday visit is calmer.
