Town 14 km south of Huichapan
A quiet whitewashed town on the plateau, with a 1620 parish church, stone wash-houses and its signature cecina with xoconostle sauce.
Nopala de Villagrán sits on the high plateau south of Huichapan, among maguey fields, nopal patches and cattle ranches. Its name comes from the Nahuatl Nopallan, "place where nopales abound", and the area was Otomí country long before the Spanish arrived. The second half of the name was added by decree in 1868 to honor Vicente Villagrán, who protected the townspeople during an attack in the 1860s.
The center is small and easy to like: cobbled streets, white houses trimmed in red, and pink cantera stone. The main square is framed by the parish church of Santa María Magdalena, finished in 1620, and the municipal palace of 1874, with a monument to the guerrilla leader Nicolás Romero, the "Lion of the Mountains". A few blocks away, the public wash-houses built in stone in 1886 are still a point of local pride.
Nopala is above all a ranching and food town. In 2025 it was named a "Pueblo con Sabor" for its cecina served with nopales and a tart xoconostle salsa, and charrería is part of everyday life, with rodeo rings, horseback rides and a big fiesta for Mary Magdalene in late July.
