Landmark 24 km north of Amealco
A 16th-century hacienda tied by legend to La Malinche, now a hotel whose restaurant makes a good stop toward San Juan del Río.
Hacienda Galindo is one of the oldest and best-known haciendas in Querétaro, set in the plains southwest of San Juan del Río, on the road that climbs toward Amealco. Its legend is famous: tradition says Hernán Cortés gave the estate to La Malinche, his interpreter, and her husband Juan Jaramillo after the conquest. Historians treat that as legend rather than documented fact; the first formal record of the property dates to around 1582, when it was already working farmland.
Over the following centuries it grew into one of the largest farming and cattle estates in the valley, and in the 19th century troops passed through during the Reform War and the French Intervention, since it sat on the road north from the capital. The main house keeps its stone arcades, thick walls, inner courtyards and a sober chapel, and it is registered by INAH as a historic monument.
Today it is a Fiesta Americana resort, which has kept the buildings in use and in good shape. You do not need to stay the night: the restaurant and gardens make a fine lunch stop on the way between Amealco and San Juan del Río.
