Pabellón de Hidalgo is a small town in the municipality of Rincón de Romos, Aguascalientes, built around the old Hacienda de San Blas. Its quiet main square, Plaza 24 de Enero, is framed by the Templo de San Blas on one side and the Museum of the Insurgency on another. People come mainly for the museum and its murals, which tie this calm farming town to one of the turning points of the War of Independence.
History
The town's story is tied to the Hacienda de San Blas, whose main house still stands on the plaza. According to local tradition, after the insurgent army was defeated at the Battle of Calderón Bridge in 1811, its leaders retreated north and stopped at this hacienda. It was here, the account goes, that Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla was stripped of command of the movement he had started. The town's name honors him.
On October 17, 1967, the hacienda's main house reopened as the Museo de la Insurgencia, created to tell the story of Mexican independence. It also holds murals by Alfredo Zermeño Flores that follow two centuries of the country's cultural, political and social life, from 1810 to 2010. In June 2023 Pabellón de Hidalgo was named a Pueblo Mágico.
