Real de Asientos is an old mining town in the cactus-dotted semi-desert of northern Aguascalientes. Visitors come for its colonial churches and the odd, memorable sights around them: 18th-century water tunnels, a gallery of mummies, a jointed 17th-century figure of Christ, and a parish art collection with paintings by Miguel Cabrera. There is also a miners' museum, a cactus museum, and a small tourist train called El Piojito.
History
As the word Real in its name indicates, Asientos grew up as a colonial mining camp, a past the town remembers today in its Museo del Minero. Its oldest buildings trace that history. The former convent of the Señor del Tepozán was founded in 1620, and the town's jointed figure of Christ dates from the same century. The parish of Nuestra Señora de Belén dates from 1705, and in the 18th century a system of tunnels was dug as a piece of hydraulic engineering. The parish also gathered a notable set of paintings, including works by Miguel Cabrera. The Guadalupe cemetery is considered the oldest in the state of Aguascalientes.
The town is the seat of the municipality of Asientos and celebrates its founding on the fourth Sunday of July. It was named a Pueblo Mágico in 2006.
