About Trancoso

Trancoso was a hacienda long before it was a town. It was founded in the late 16th century as San Juan, carved out of the Monte Grande estate, and soon became San Juan de Trancoso. Its first known owner was Vicente Zaldívar Mendoza; his widow, María de Oñate y Cortés, leased it out. In the 18th century its job was to supply the city of Zacatecas with meat and grain. The estate centre had a house, a church and a mill, and by 1751 its outlying ranches included places that are towns today, among them Tlacotes, Zóquite and Tacoaleche.

Auctioned in 1826, it was bought for 146,520 pesos by Antonio García Salinas, who ran the Agostadero hacienda, and by then it covered more than 83,000 hectares. When the railway from Zacatecas to Ojocaliente opened in 1889, a crowd turned out at the hacienda to cheer the returning train. After the Revolution, in 1921, the land was split among people from Guadalupe and Ojocaliente, and more than twenty ejidos were formed on it.

Trancoso stayed part of Guadalupe until January 1, 2000, when it became Zacatecas's 57th municipality; about 17,000 people now live in the town. The old hacienda building still stands on Calle Hidalgo, but it has been closed to visitors since 2024 and can only be seen from outside. Each July the town holds its Pan Ranchero and Condoche Fair, with wood-oven bread, sweet and savoury condoches, bread filled with beans or with cheese and red chile, menudo, birria and matlachines dancers; the 2025 fair was the ninth, with over 40 bakers and cooks.
