Fresnillo is a mining city in the heart of Zacatecas, and the state's Pueblos Mágicos surround it. Sombrerete, an hour and a quarter northwest, is a baroque silver town beside the rock pillars of the Sierra de Órganos. Jerez, with its arcades and the poet López Velarde's house, and Guadalupe, with its convent museum of colonial painting, are each about an hour south. Villanueva and its La Quemada ruins, and the four pueblos of Aguascalientes, fill out a weekend.
