    About Sain Alto

    Sain Alto is the seat of a municipality in northwestern Zacatecas, in the state's bean-growing belt, with about 5,300 people. Its name comes from Zaín or Çayn, a group of Zacateco people who settled here around 1535-1540 under a chief named Saín Alonso. The town was first called San Sebastián con el renombre de Saín, then San Sebastián de Saín Alto, and finally just Sain Alto.

    The first Spaniards to arrive were Ginés Vázquez de Mercado, in 1552 and 1553, and Francisco de Ibarra, in September 1554. Under Zacatecas's first state constitution of 1825 it became the seat of its own municipality, made a free municipality on August 19, 1916. Mercury mining began in the municipality in 1934, and in 1939 and 1940 it supplied 12% of Mexico's mercury.

    The climate is cold steppe: May is the warmest month and January the coolest, and nearly all the rain falls in summer, September being the wettest month and March almost dry. The town's feast is that of its patron, San Sebastián Mártir, and around the region it is known for its maize and bean harvests and for the municipality's hot-spring balnearios.

    How to get to Sain Alto

    Sain Alto lies between Fresnillo and Sombrerete. From Fresnillo it is 67 km by road, about an hour by car; from Sombrerete, the nearest Pueblo Mágico, 43 km and about 40 minutes. From Zacatecas city you go via Fresnillo, about 45 minutes away. We found no published bus timetables to the town; ask at Fresnillo's Central de Autobuses on Calle Durango 402.
