Town 14 km northeast of Guadalupe
A former hacienda village with the House of 100 Doors, a huge adobe manor that now houses a center for Zacatecas folk art.
Tacoaleche is a farming village about 15 minutes east of Guadalupe that grew up around an old hacienda, and it is worth the short drive for one building: the Casa Grande, better known as the House of 100 Doors. It is a two-story adobe mansion with stone supports covering about a quarter of a hectare, begun in 1891 by Antonio García after he inherited part of a larger estate.
Despite its name, the house has 99 doors, and the missing one is the subject of several local legends: in one version García promised a bride a house with a hundred doors and lost her when he came up short; in others the wedding fell apart because of deceit, or because of the Revolution. Whatever the truth, the building fell into ruin over the 20th century and was restored by the state.
Since 2011 it has housed a center for research and experimentation in Zacatecas folk art, with a collection of more than a thousand works and space for workshops, sales and events, and local artisans work in cardboard, stone, wool and ceramics. Around the plaza you will also find the village church and the old hacienda granaries, called Los Conos for their cone-shaped roofs. Tacoaleche has no hotels and few places to eat, so it is best done as a half-day trip from Guadalupe.
