Town 9 km west of Real de Asientos

An old mining town between the hills: a filigree-domed parish, a Black Christ, a museum with mammoth bones and an observatory.

Tepezalá is a small mining town in the hills west of Real de Asientos. Its name comes from Nahuatl and is usually translated as "place between the hills," which is exactly how it looks: a compact center tucked among dry, rocky slopes that were worked for their minerals for centuries.

The town's pride is its churches. The parish of Nuestra Señora del Refugio has a dome decorated in fine filigree work and painted walls that look like old wallpaper, and the church of Nuestro Señor de Tepezalá keeps a venerated image of a Black Christ. The Antonio Reyna museum tells the town's story with mammoth remains found in the area, arrowheads of the Guachichil people and tools from the old mines.

Tepezalá is pushing to become a Pueblo Mágico, and it has been adding attractions: a crafts house where you can watch or learn to weave ojos de Dios, and the Hipatia observatory and planetarium, with views over the town. Together with Real de Asientos it makes an easy day in the old mining country of northern Aguascalientes.
