Town 39 km northwest of Lagos de Moreno
A Los Altos town with a UNESCO-listed old cemetery and the Museo de las Ánimas, which displays naturally mummified bodies.
Encarnación de Díaz is a town in the north of Los Altos de Jalisco, on the old road between Lagos de Moreno and Aguascalientes. It took its name from an image of the Virgin found in the area, and in 1879 added "de Díaz" in honor of Porfirio Díaz.
Its most unusual sight is the cemetery of the Señor de la Misericordia, the old town graveyard. Because the town lay on the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, the colonial silver road between Mexico City and the north, this cemetery is one of the components of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro World Heritage site listed by UNESCO in 2010.
Next to it is the Museo de las Ánimas, which displays bodies that mummified naturally in the local soil, many still in their original clothing, together with rooms on funeral customs from pre-Hispanic times onward and stories tied to local history, including the Cristero War. The town center also has the parish of the Encarnación, the sanctuary of Jesús, María y José and an old railway station.
