Temacapulín, or Temaca to locals, is a tiny village in the Altos de Jalisco, beside the Río Verde and about five kilometers north of Cañadas de Obregón. Its name comes from the Nahuatl word for a thermal bath, a nod to the warm springs in the area. The village is centered on the Basilica of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, and it is reached by a single rural road, which keeps it very quiet.
History
Temacapulín's origins go back to the years around the Spanish conquest of Nueva Galicia. This area was a theater of the Mixtón War, which ended with the defeat of the indigenous rebels in 1542, and the village most likely began as a settlement of pacified indigenous people established between 1550 and 1552. In 1772 it is mentioned as part of the confraternity of Jalostotitlán.
After independence and the creation of the state of Jalisco, the village belonged first to the canton of La Barca and then to that of Teocaltiche. Since 1903 it has been part of the municipality of Cañadas de Obregón. In recent years residents organized to defend the village, its lands and its historic buildings, including the basilica, from being flooded by a dam project on the Río Verde. Temacapulín was named a Pueblo Mágico on June 26, 2023.
