About Huejúcar

Huejúcar is the seat of the municipality of the same name in northern Jalisco, at about 1,850 metres above sea level and bordered on three sides by Zacatecas. The name comes from Nahuatl and is read as "place of willows", from huéxotl, willow. At the 2020 census the town had 3,762 inhabitants.

Before the conquest the region belonged to the lordship of Colotlán, and in 1530 Captain Pedro Almíndez Chirinos passed through on Nuño de Guzmán's orders. Huejúcar had a town council by 1825 and became a municipality by decree on 9 November 1861.

The church of San Francisco de Asís dates from the 18th century; the town also has a 19th-century sanctuary and the church of San Pedro, built in an indigenous style. The surroundings are rugged, with mesas and hills reaching 2,600 metres, the Achimec dam and a hot spring called El Atotonilco. The town has four charro arenas, and local crafts include huaraches, hats and clay goods. Dishes mentioned for the region are pepián, gorditas, pozole and buñuelos, with pulque and aguamiel to drink.

The main date is the regional fair, held the week of 4 October, the feast of St Francis of Assisi, which draws visitors from Colotlán, Jerez and Santa María de los Ángeles. The Torito Cabresto is held on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday.
