About Totatiche

Totatiche is the seat of the municipality of the same name in northern Jalisco, beside the Zacatecas border and at about 1,750 metres above sea level. The 2020 census counted 1,338 people. The name is explained as "place of our revered fathers". Before the founding, Tepehuan, Caxcan and Zacatec peoples lived here; Captain Miguel Caldera founded the town in April 1595. It depended on Colotlán for civil and religious matters until its own parish was created in 1755, and its population grew from 1730 with silver from nearby Bolaños. It received the title of villa in 1878.

The parish church in the centre was finished in 1901 and is dedicated to Nuestra Señora del Rosario, a devotion tied to Fray Antonio Margil's 1711 mission. Totatiche is the homeland of San Cristóbal Magallanes Jara, the priest who founded the auxiliary seminary in 1915, was arrested in town in 1926 and executed in Colotlán during the Cristero War. Around the town are a Guadalupe chapel dating from the 16th to 18th centuries, Cerro La Calavera and the Colorado and Coronas waterfalls.

The main festivals are for Nuestra Señora del Rosario, 29 September to 7 October, with the annual fair in the first week of October, and for the Virgin of Guadalupe, 4 to 12 December. About 10 km to the northwest lie Temastián and its sanctuary.
