Cerro de las Ventanas

Archaeological site 30 km west of Nochistlán

A fortified Caxcan hilltop in the Juchipila canyon, with rooms built into a cliff face; free INAH site with a 2 km walking circuit.

Cerro de las Ventanas, also called the Peñol de Juchipila, is an archaeological site on a steep hill above the village of El Remolino, about five kilometers south of Juchipila in the canyon west of Nochistlán. Its name, "hill of the windows," comes from the stone rooms built into a sheer cliff near the top, whose openings you can see from the highway below.

People lived on and around the hill from the first centuries AD, and most of the buildings date to the Late Classic and Postclassic periods. In the 13th century the Caxcanes moved into the canyon, and they turned the hill into one of the most heavily fortified sites in ancient Mexico: the citadel sits above cliffs and could only be reached by a narrow, switchbacking stairway, with a settlement of more than 25 hectares spread below.

The Caxcanes of this canyon, together with those of Nochistlán, led the resistance against the Spanish in the 1530s, which ended with the Mixtón War of 1540 to 1542. Today the site is run by INAH, and a walking circuit of about two kilometers takes you up through its sectors to wide views over the canyon.

What to see and do

Walk the roughly 2 km circuit up through the site's sectors.
Look for the cliff rooms, the "windows" that give the hill its name.
Climb to the top for views over the Juchipila canyon and the neighboring Cerro Chihuahua.
Stop in Juchipila to see the Franciscan church of San Francisco, one of the oldest in the region.

Getting there

From Nochistlán it is about 65 km and a little over an hour by car: head north on the road toward Tlachichila, then west down into the Juchipila canyon to Federal Highway 54 and south past Juchipila to El Remolino, where a dirt road in good condition climbs to the site. Buses between Guadalajara and Zacatecas on Highway 54 pass El Remolino. INAH lists the site as open daily 9:00 to 17:00 (last entry 16:00) with free entry; confirm before going. No food or pets inside; bring water and a hat.
