About Huacasco

Huacasco, also spelled Huascasco and officially San José de Huacasco, is a village in the northeast of the municipality of Santa María de los Ángeles, in Jalisco's Northern region close to the Zacatecas border, at about 1,960 m above sea level. It is documented from 1570, when it was founded as an encomienda called San Buenaventura de Guacasco. It began as a hacienda and the hamlet grew around the main house; it belonged to the Obra Pía de La Quemada and was the southernmost hacienda of that estate. In 1928 residents were granted 1,480 hectares taken from the haciendas of Huacasco, El Laurel and La Encarnación.

The name is said to combine the Spanish word "vacas" (cows) with the Nahuatl suffix "co", place, meaning "place of cows". Village life is still tied to the land: maize, beans, squash and alfalfa, plus cattle, pigs and horses.

What there is to see includes the parish of San José, the shrine of the Purísima Asunción, the hacienda's casco and main house with its granaries, the ruins of the old Purísima chapel, the Guadalupe hermitage, the aqueduct and Arco Sur bridge, the dam wall and "Oreja" of the old reservoir, and the so-called Cristero tunnels of the Sur Profundo. The main fiestas are 19 March (San José), 15 August (the Purísima) and 4 September (Señor de los Migrantes).
