Town 15 km northeast of Salvatierra
A quiet farm town, the 'place of willows', with a rainy-season waterfall, a reservoir and wooded parks nearby.
Tarimoro is a quiet farming town east of Salvatierra whose name comes from the Purépecha for "place of willows". Its official founding is dated December 5, 1563, and it remains a small municipal seat of around twelve thousand people, surrounded by fertile fields watered by a canal from a local reservoir, the Presa del Cubo.
The center of town is the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, the patron's church, on the main square. Around Tarimoro the countryside has a few natural escapes: a waterfall that comes to life in the rainy season and flows down toward the Presa del Cubo, the El Galán ecological park, and Parque Tlalixcoya, a wooded natural area toward Apaseo el Alto that is popular for picnics and hikes.
The municipality has also put together a local tourism route that takes in an old hacienda, La Bóveda, an agave distillery, a pulque ranch, a brickworks where you can try making bricks by hand, and a small museum of pre-Hispanic pieces. It is low-key and best for travelers who like to see everyday rural Guanajuato; go in the rainy season to see the waterfall at its best.
