Town 33 km southeast of Comonfort
Guanajuato's woodcarving town, full of workshops making furniture and saints, and a big pomegranate grower.
Apaseo el Alto is a town south of Celaya known for two things: carved wood and pomegranates. Its workshops have made it one of the main woodcarving centers of Guanajuato, and the craft is a family trade passed down for generations. Artisans turn cedar and other woods into furniture, doors, headboards, religious figures, frames and decorative pieces, often in elaborate colonial and baroque styles, and you can watch some of them at work.
The town is first mentioned in 1538, when the encomendero Hernán Pérez de Bocanegra received mills here, and it only became a municipality of its own in 1947. Its other claim to fame is fruit: Apaseo el Alto bills itself as the country's leading producer of pomegranate, and the harvest season around late summer brings the red fruit to market stalls everywhere.
Come for a slow stroll through the workshops and showrooms along the main streets. Even if you are not planning to ship home a carved dining table, smaller pieces make good souvenirs, and the craftsmanship is impressive up close.
