About San Pablo Casacuarán

Casacuarán, formally San Pablo Casacuarán, sits on the flat farmland of southern Guanajuato, along the road that joins Yuriria and Salvatierra. The name is Purépecha and is usually read as "on the slope of the mountain". People lived here before the friars: the remains found nearby are yácatas, the stone platforms the Purépecha built, which locals call cuecillos.

The founding date usually given is 12 February 1582. Augustinians from the convent of San Pablo in Yuriria set the village up on land that had been the Hacienda de Santa Rosa de Pastores, which is why the patron saint is Paul. It is now one of the larger communities in the municipality, with about 2,200 people in the 2020 census, and it lives mostly from farming. It has a plaza, a church, schools from kindergarten to secondary, a health centre, a savings cooperative and the municipal delegation office, so most daily errands do not need a trip into Yuriria.

The fair in January is what sets it apart. The opening date changes with each year's programme (it has been published as the 16th, 18th or 22nd), but it always ends on 25 January, the feast of Paul's conversion. Expect a parade, the palote dance, dances, rodeos, a parade of cars and brass bands, and on the last day a procession down the main street from the top of the village. Outside those dates it is a quiet farming village with no tourist sights, and most people see it on the way between Yuriria and Salvatierra.
