Santa María del Río is a small town about 46 km from the city of San Luis Potosí, known across Mexico for its rebozos. Local weavers make fine shawls by hand, and they are traditionally sold with a rebocera, a small wooden box decorated with inlay work. Visitors come to watch the weaving, shop in the workshops, and walk a quiet town where trade, crafts and farming still set the pace.
History
The area was home to the Guachichil people before the Spanish arrived. There are two accounts of how the town got its name. One says that in 1542, on a feast day of the Virgin, a group of Guachichiles was baptized here and the settlement founded on the spot was placed under the protection of the Virgin Mary. The other says the name first appears in 1589, tied to a Franciscan convent established in the place.
Over time the town became the seat of its municipality and built its living on commerce, agriculture and, above all, handcrafts. The weaving of fine textiles, especially rebozos, became its signature, along with the inlaid wooden boxes made to hold them. That craft tradition is the main reason Santa María del Río was named a Pueblo Mágico in 2020.
