Landmark 39 km west of Santa María del Río
A fortress-like hacienda founded in 1596 west of Villa de Reyes, with its main house, chapel and administrator's house still standing.
The Hacienda de San José de los Bledos lies in the countryside about 21 kilometers from Villa de Reyes, at the foot of the hills on the western edge of the valley. Founded in 1596, it is one of the oldest haciendas in San Luis Potosí. Its first owners, Francisco de Cárdenas and Gabriel Ortiz de Fuenmayor, brought Christianized Indigenous families, among them Tlaxcaltecas and Otomíes, to the marshy plain known as the Ciénega de los Bledos, where they lived alongside the Guamares and other peoples of the region.
The complex of main house, chapel and administrator's residence is built like a fortress, with thick walls that speak of the frontier it once stood on. Over the centuries it received a viceroy and his wife, several governors of the state and, according to the state tourism board, the royalist officer who captured José María Morelos during the War of Independence.
Bledos is a place for people who like old stones and quiet landscapes rather than polished attractions. Its mining and farming past is written in the buildings, and the drive through the valley, with the sierra behind, is part of the visit.
