Hot springs 23 km west of Santa María del Río
A national park of rocky hills and thermal springs, with an ejido-run resort of warm pools on the grounds of an old hacienda.
Gogorrón is a national park in the municipality of Villa de Reyes, created in 1936 and covering about 25,000 hectares of dry hills, scrub and rock outcrops west of Santa María del Río. Its most striking feature is the Cerro Bernalejo, a huge stone outcrop that rises above the valley, along with cliffs and scattered monoliths.
What brings most people here, though, is hot water. Thermal springs rise in the valley, and the old Hacienda de Gogorrón, whose first land grants date to 1592, is now a vacation center run by the local ejido. It has several warm pools, a children's pool, water slides and hot tubs, plus grills, palapas, a restaurant and areas for camping.
It is a family place, busiest on weekends and holidays with visitors from the city of San Luis Potosí, and a good contrast to Santa María's colonial streets.
What to see and do
Soak in the thermal pools at the ejido's vacation center.
Walk among the rock formations and look up at the Cerro Bernalejo.
Camp or spend the night to enjoy the pools early, before the crowds.
See what remains of the old Hacienda de Gogorrón on the resort grounds.
Getting there
The resort is roughly 45 minutes to an hour from Santa María del Río by car. Take Highway 57 north, turn off toward Villa de Reyes, and continue on the Villa de Reyes–San Felipe highway to the Gogorrón turnoff. Weekends are busy; come early for a spot by the pools.
