Landmark 23 km northwest of Santa María del Río
A former hacienda turned pilgrimage center of the Apostolate of the Cross, with a museum on Blessed Concepción Cabrera and nuns' sweets.
The Hacienda de Jesús María, in the municipality of Villa de Reyes, was formed when Octaviano Cabrera Lacavex bought land from the neighboring haciendas of Pardo, Laguna de San Vicente and La Pila. In time it became the headquarters of the works of the Apostolate of the Cross, the religious family inspired by Concepción Cabrera de Armida, a potosina laywoman, mother and mystic who was beatified in 2019.
Today the hacienda is a devotional center that welcomes pilgrims from across Mexico and beyond. Its grounds house several congregations of religious sisters and retreat houses, and the main house has a museum with personal belongings and photographs that tell the story of Concepción Cabrera's life and writings, along with books about her spirituality.
Even if you are not on pilgrimage, it is a peaceful place to see a working hacienda complex, and the sisters prepare homemade sweets and pastries that they sell to visitors.
