    Real de Catorce

A former silver-mining boomtown high in the desert mountains of San Luis Potosí, reached through a long one-lane tunnel. Partly abandoned for decades, its stone streets and ruins give it a ghost-town feel. It is also a pilgrimage site and lies near Wirikuta, sacred land of the Wixárika people.

    Aquismón

Aquismón is a small town in the Huasteca Potosina, the green, humid eastern edge of San Luis Potosí, where about a third of residents identify as Indigenous. It is the starting point for the Sótano de las Golondrinas, the enormous pit cave where flocks of birds spiral out at dawn, and for other natural sites in the surrounding municipality. The town itself is compact and unhurried, a place to arrange guides, eat, and sleep before an early start.

  3. 3 Wrought-iron bandstand with its red dome on the main plaza, Santa María del Río, San Luis Potosí

    Santa María del Río

Santa María del Río is a small town about 46 km from the city of San Luis Potosí, known across Mexico for its rebozos. Local weavers make fine shawls by hand, and they are traditionally sold with a rebocera, a small wooden box decorated with inlay work. Visitors come to watch the weaving, shop in the workshops, and walk a quiet town where trade, crafts and farming still set the pace.

Ciudad del Maíz is a small, unhurried town in the east of San Luis Potosí and the seat of the municipality of the same name. It was named a Pueblo Mágico in 2023.
