Ciudad del Maíz is a small, unhurried town in the east of San Luis Potosí and the seat of the municipality of the same name. It was named a Pueblo Mágico in 2023. Life here moves around the central plaza and the parish church, and the town serves as a starting point for exploring the surrounding countryside of hills, ranchland and rural communities.
History
Ciudad del Maíz is the head town of its municipality in the state of San Luis Potosí and has long been the place where the surrounding farming communities come to trade and do business. It remains a largely Catholic, Spanish-speaking town with a small Indigenous population.
In recent decades it has grown slowly outward, absorbing neighboring settlements such as Abelardo Aguilar Turrubiartes in 2005, Villa Antigua in 2009 and Ejido Chiwe in 2011. In 2023 it joined the Pueblos Mágicos program.
