Ciudad Valles is the base for the Huasteca Potosina, and its two nearest Pueblos Mágicos are the region's stars. Aquismón, under an hour away, is the gateway to the Tamul waterfall and the Sótano de las Golondrinas, a cave shaft that swifts spiral out of at dawn. Xilitla, an hour and a half into the misty sierra, has Edward James's surrealist garden of concrete stairways in the jungle. Over the mountains for a weekend are the Sierra Gorda missions of Jalpan and the highland village of Pinal de Amoles.
