About Zona Arqueológica de Tamtoc

Tamtoc is the largest known city of the ancient Huastec people, spread over about 210 hectares of the Tamuín plain in a bend of the Tampaón River. Unlike the stepped stone pyramids of central Mexico, its buildings were earthen platforms with round or rounded corners, so today the site looks like a green park of grassy mounds and plazas. INAH counts some 70 structures; around the main plaza rise El Cubilete, 36 metres high, and El Tantoque, 21 metres. Springs feed a system of ancient channels that carried water through the city to an artificial lake, the Laguna de los Patos.

People lived here for a very long time. Archaeologists identify at least three periods of occupation, the oldest around 600 BC, with the city at its height between about AD 900 and 1350, and it was abandoned before or around the Spanish conquest. Its most famous find came in 2005, when restorers working on a channel uncovered Monument 32, "La Sacerdotisa": a sandstone slab about 8 metres long and 4 high, weighing more than 30 tonnes and covered in carvings, which had lain under water by a spring for some 2,500 years. Nearby they found a life-size, headless female sculpture with raised scar patterns, known as the Venus or Scarred Woman of Tamtoc. Women are prominent everywhere here: most of the burials and figurines found are female.

The site was explored in the 1930s and 1960s, has been excavated by a team led by archaeologist Estela Martínez Mora since 2000, and opened to the public in 2006. Access has been fragile in recent years: in 2024 the site closed for five months after rains damaged the access roads, and when it reopened in December 2024 it was open on Sundays only, which INAH still listed as the schedule in January 2026. In the rainy season INAH asks visitors to take care on the access road.
