About Ciudad Valles
Ciudad Valles sits on the banks of the Valles River in the east of San Luis Potosí, in the hot, green lowlands of the Huasteca Potosina. With about 136,000 people in the city itself (2020 census) it is the largest place in the region, a busy commercial town built on sugar cane, cattle, citrus and a cement industry. It is not a pretty colonial town, but it is the practical gateway: locals call it the main door to the Huasteca, because it has the most hotels, restaurants, bus links and adventure operators.
The Spanish conquistador Nuño de Guzmán founded the settlement on 25 July 1533, the feast of Saint James, as Villa de Santiago de los Valles de Oxitipa; the Tének name for the place is usually given as Tamtokow bichou. For centuries it was a small stop on the road between the mining capital of San Luis Potosí and the port of Tampico, and it only grew quickly after sugar mills arrived in the 1950s. The oldest building in town is the parish church of Santiago Apóstol in the centre, and the Museo Regional Huasteco, founded by teacher Oralia Gutiérrez Barrios, keeps a large private collection of pre-Hispanic Huastec objects.
Most visitors use Valles as a base for day trips. The Micos waterfalls are on the edge of the municipality, the Sierra del Abra Tanchipa biosphere reserve rises to the northeast, Tamtoc's ruins lie on the road to Tampico, and Tamul, Aquismón and Tamasopo are within reach. In town, the riverside Parque Tantocob, opened in 2017, has more than 30 hectares of trails and a malecón. The climate is humid and tropical, very hot from April to October and mild in winter. Around the Day of the Dead the region celebrates Xantolo, with altars, cemetery visits and costumed dancers, and the city also hosts the yearly Feria Nacional de la Huasteca Potosina (FENAHUAP).
