About Cascadas de Tamasopo

The Cascadas de Tamasopo are three waterfalls on the Tamasopo River, side by side on the edge of the small town of the same name, in the west of the Huasteca Potosina. Each drops about 20 metres over mossy limestone into clear, turquoise pools; the first splits into two falls and the second plunges in a single narrow, roaring jet. Downstream the Tamasopo joins other rivers to form the Gallinas, the river that later goes over the edge at Tamul. The town's name comes from Tének and is usually translated as "place where it drips".

Today the falls sit inside a well-run park. The main area, La Playita, is a natural stone beach facing the three falls, shallow at the front and deeper near the water; children need watching there. The Poza del Mecate is up to about 8 metres deep, with a rope swing and jumping spots, and at the Poza de la Espuma the falling water whips up foam. Trails, hanging bridges, a viewpoint, the ruins of an old mill with a photo display on local history, a fish hatchery, restaurants and cabins round it out.

This is a developed, family place rather than a wild one: Lonely Planet calls it crowded and commercial, and weekends and holidays bring big crowds, so arrive early. The upside is that swimming is easy and relatively safe. The park is about 2 km from the town centre, and Puente de Dios, a cavern pool on the same river system, is a few minutes away, so many people see both in one day.
